If you have never been to the restaurant Flower Child, you need to. I discovered Flower Child last year when I started my first year of college in Arizona. Being an Orange County girl, I was used to having health food restaurants on every corner and hoped Arizona would be the same. Luckily this glorious and delicious restaurant is just a few minutes down the street from my school.
I love this place SO much that I even wrote an essay about it in my first semester english class. They have quite a few locations now! And if you live in California, not to worry because they just put one up in Newport Beach along with the one in Santa Monica and San Diego! They have an array of salads, wraps, and different plates to choose from!!
A few meal recommendations if you find yourself at any Flower Child location (:
Mother Earth Bowl
Organic Kale Salad
Strawberry Fields Salad
Oh, and ask for a side of pita bread! You won’t regret it!
To be more cost effective and to be able to enjoy the tastes of one of my favorite restaurants while I’m living at home during the summer, I decided to make a copycat recipe of probably my favorite dish… the Organic Kale salad.
You will need:
- Dinosaur kale (cut into thin strips to help with digestion- I just used some kitchen scissors to do this)
- Half of a grapefruit, peeled and chopped
- Half of a Pink Lady apple, cored and sliced into triangles
- Toasted almonds, chopped (I put a handful of raw almonds in a pan and put them on the stove for a few minutes on medium)
*I eyeballed the dressing components, but here’s a rough estimate of how much I used if you need some guidance
- 1 Tbsp of apple cider vinegar
- Juice of half of a lemon
- 1 Tsp of olive oil
*optional- dried currants and cheese (white cheddar or goat cheese would be great!!)
I recommend massaging the kale in the ACV, lemon juice, and olive oil before adding everything else! This will help a lot in digesting the kale. I then added all of the fruit, nuts, and a nice piece of salmon that I cooked on the stove with olive oil, salt, and pepper until it is nice and crispy!
This salad really is SO delicious and will not disappoint! You could also replace the salmon with chicken or steak, just like Flower Child can also do!
Thanks for reading!! I’d love to know if you give this tasty dish a try!
